Influence: Quiero Que / Necesito Que

This lesson introduces a useful relationship you will build on later: when one person wants or needsanother personto act, Spanish opens a new clause withque.

Quiero comer.

I want to eat. — same subject; the earlier infinitive pattern.

Quiero que…

I want another person to… — different-subject influence phrase pattern.

Necesito que…

I need another person to… — another different-subject influence phrase pattern.

Recognize for now Do not invent the verb after que.This module teaches you to recognize the new clause relationship and its meaning. the verb forms that complete it come later.

Mexican Polite Indirectness

Everyday Mexican Spanish often softens requests instead of translating English directness word for word. Learn these four introduced tools as complete conversation expressions.

por favor

please — adds politeness to an otherwise familiar request.

quisiera

I would like — a softened request phrase pattern.

podría

could / would be able to — used here as a softened question phrase pattern.

me gustaría

I would like — a polite wish/request phrase pattern.
