Keep the Thread Clear

What you will learn:I can keep people, things and ideas clear across connected Spanish. Instead of repeating every noun or full idea, you will learn how Spanish signals first mention, known reference, whole-idea reference, possession, reference to a whole idea and safe leaving out repeated words.

From sentences to connected language

The new difficulty is not longer vocabulary lists. It is keeping the listener oriented when the same person, thing, action or idea continues across several sentences.

English comparison

English often repeats a noun, possessive or full clause. Spanish frequently uses articles, neuter demonstratives,lo, tonic possessives, proforms or omission once the reference is recoverable.

Keep in mind

Every practice item uses Spanish from Module 76 and earlier modules. language you only need to recognize it for now is something to recognize for now; future B2 vocabulary is saved for later.

Lesson 1 — Second Mention & Anaphoric Articles

Use indefinite articles to Introduce a person or thing, then definite articles when that same or associated person or thing you mean is known.

Hay un problema. El problema es importante.
There is a problem. The problem is important.
Quiero una habitación. La habitación es grande.
I want a room. The room is big.

Lesson 2 — Demonstratives Across connected language

Use esto, eso and aquello not only for things, but also to point back to whole ideas, events or situations.

No puedo trabajar hoy. Eso es un problema.
I cannot work today. That is a problem.
Ayer trabajaba aquí. Aquello era importante.
Yesterday, I was working here. That was important.

Lesson 3 — LO for a Whole Idea & Clear Reference

Distinguish direct-object lo from lo referring to a whole idea or quality, and use lo que plus lo + adjective without losing who or what you mean.

¿Es médico? — Lo soy.
Are you a doctor? — I am.
¿Está cerrado? — Lo está.
Is it closed? — It is.
Lo que quiero es trabajar.
What I want is to work.
Lo importante es trabajar.
The important thing is to work.

Lesson 4 — Tonic Possessives in connected language & Dative Possession

Recall tonic possessives and extend them to omitted nouns, postposed possession and the two course-learned dative-possession models.

El mío es grande.
Mine is big.
Es una amiga mía.
She is a friend of mine.
Me han reparado el coche.
They have repaired my car.
¿Te hago la cama?
Shall I make your bed?

Lesson 5 — Maintain the Thread

Reduce unnecessary repetition with hacerlo, decirlo, darlo, esto/eso and guided leaving out repeated words when reference remains clear.

Quiero trabajar. Puedo hacerlo.
I want to work. I can do it.
Trabajo hoy. Ella también.
I work today. She does too.
No puedo ir. Él tampoco.
I cannot go. He cannot either.

Review & Reuse — 50 Rolls
