You Know and You Understand

Use sabe for polite “you know” and entiende for polite “you understand.” Ask about knowledge and comprehension while recycling familiar language from Modules 1–14.

Lesson 1

You know: sabe

Use sabe for facts and information known by one person. Use conoce for knowing a person or place.

Spanish often leaves out usted. Here, sabe by itself can mean polite you know.

Sabe la respuesta. = You know the answer.
No sabe la información. = You do not know the information.
¿Sabe dónde está? = Do you know where it is?

Use saber after familiar helper forms

After puede, quiere, or necesita, use saber: puede saber, quiere saber, necesita saber.

Use entiende to say what one person understands and to ask polite comprehension questions.
